CITIZEN REX #1 (OF 6) citizenr1
Mario Hernandez (W) and Gilbert Hernandez (W/A)
On sale July 8
b&w, 24 pages
$3.50

“What compels life without a soul?”

Comics legends Gilbert and Mario Hernandez join forces to present a bizarre, sexy view of the future and what it means to be human. Twenty years ago, the most famous, lifelike robot in the world was engulfed in scandal, arrested, and deactivated. Since then, an anti-robot movement has developed, while body modification is in and prosthetic limbs have become hot, black-market items.

Stories like these are the stock-in-trade of gossip columnist Sergio Bauntin, whose startling revelations earn him the constant scrutiny of both the mob and the city’s mysterious investigators, the Truth Takers. When Sergio catches wind of sightings of the long-missing robot celebrity CTZ-RX, all of these interests will collide in violence and intrigue.

It’s sci-fi adventure with beautiful women by Los Bros. Hernandez!

YOU SHALL DIE BY YOUR OWN EVIL CREATION TP #2 youshalldie
By Fletcher Hanks
Edited by Patrick Rosenkranz

Fletcher Hanks was the first great comic book auteur. That is, he wrote, penciled, inked, and lettered all of his own stories. He completed an astonishing 48 stories in three years from 1939-1941. As a one-man-cartooning-band, his work packs the wallop of a unique and unified artistic vision. He was a true comics visionary. In the earliest days of the comic book, before censorship, it was “anything goes!”-and in the tales of Fletcher Hanks, anything went!

The superhero Stardust gazes down at evil-doers from space and doles out ice cold slabs of poetic justice with his wizardry. A villain out to kidnap all the heads of state gets turned into a giant head, himself…no body, just a head! The jungle protectress, Fantomah, looks like Jean Harlow in a skin-tight black negligee. But when she sees an evil scientist drugging gorillas to become slaves, her head transforms into a flaming skull and she tosses the villain to the gorillas who proceed to graphically tear the guy limb from ragged limb. Adam Warren returns to creator owned work
by Shane Hnetka

“Bahh. Like all too many females, the alpha wench fails to appreciate a well-timed movie quote!”

Adam Warren was writing and drawing manga before it was popular here in North America. In the late 80′s, Warren began drawing and eventually writing an American adaptation of the popular anime The Dirty Pair. I discovered his work after he had already completed several Dirty Pair series and found I enjoyed them immensely. Later, when he took over Gen 13, I felt he had produced some of his best work on the title. I try and pick up Adam Warren’s work whenever he does something new. Lately, he has been finding work with Marvel, such as his enjoyable Livewires miniseries, but Empowered is a return to creator owned work. (more…)

Marvel Teams With Madhouse & Ellis for Anime

Marvel Entertainment Inc., has partnered with renowned Japanese animation studio Madhouse (Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers) to create four all new anime versions of classic Marvel Super Heroes. ‘Fear Agent’ in ‘Early Development’

‘Fear Agent’ in ‘Early Development’FearAgent_tp5-lg
Published: 07/15/2009 02:05am

Dark Horse’s Fear Agent, by Rick Remender, is in early development at Universal, according to Hollywood Reporter. It’s an open-writing assignment, with the possibility that Jonathan Shestack (Air Force One, Escape from Planet Earth) could come on to produce, according to the report.

Four Fear Agent trade paperbacks are in print, with a fifth due in December.

Yen Press Will Publish Twilight Graphic Novels

From ICv2:

In the closest thing to printing money that we’ve heard about this year, Yen Press has the rights to graphic novels based on Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series, according to Entertainment Weekly.  Art will be by Korean artist Young Kim, with Meyer “deeply immersed in the project, reviewing every panel,” according to the report.

This weekend’s issue of Entertainment Weekly will include finished illustrations of Edward, Bella, and Jacob.

This is the kind of deal that could be a transformational event for Yen, which has already been getting some titles in the top ten of late (see “Top 25 Manga Properties”).  Like the first time the fledgling Fox network got NFL rights, Yen’s other properties will enjoy something of a halo effect from a property with the strength of Twilight (and it certainly wouldn’t hurt sales of Yen Plus if it included Twilight stories).

The impact of Twilight on the teen girl book buying audience has been cited as one reason for the decline in manga sales in the U.S. last year.  Now the property has a chance to bring a new generation of readers to the art form.
